Paula Paes Leme “Camada sobre Camada” - “Layer over Layer”
Paula Paes Leme is a Brazilian artist known for her vibrant, lively and colorful paintings. She is also the founder of Leme Atelier, an art studio and gallery located in Lisbon.
Her work is diverse and includes both figurative and abstract paintings inspired by her Brazilian heritage and travels. Her paintings often feature patterns and themes of nature, lifestyle, local culture, public space, urban motifs or details of everyday life.
Paula’s paintings are characterized by bold brushstrokes, bright colors, stripes, layer juxtapositions (layers are called ”camadas” in Portuguese) and dynamic compositions. Paula uses a variety of mediums and techniques, including acrylic, oil, watercolor, plaster, masking tapes, collages and cut-outs to create her unique, expressive and surprising works of art. She makes use of the spatula, creates textures and then removes or shades them. She works in layers to create stories.
On top of the typical squared one per one meter format, Paula often uses unusual formats for her canvases like rhombus, vertical fine rectangles and huge canvasses several meters long.
Her creative process begins with reflection and a phase of internal incubation, which then opens up spontaneously, transparently and joyfully to create the work of art. The action, soul and original techniques she uses are reflected in her “telas”, as Paula likes to call them.
Leme's artwork is highly sought after by art enthusiasts, and her pieces can be found in galleries and private collections around the world. Leme Atelier is a popular destination for art lovers in Lisbon, and regularly hosts exhibitions and events featuring Leme's work.
