About Paula.
Paula Paes Leme is a Brazilian visual artist whose practice explores the relationship between painting, geometry, and spatial perception. Working primarily with acrylic, plaster, collage, and layered textures, she builds compositions through rhythmic stripes, modular forms, and vibrant color structures that suggest movement, pathways, and constructed landscapes.
Her work often develops through a process of layering and transformation. Surfaces are built, altered, and sometimes partially removed using tools such as spatulas, masking tape, and cut-outs, creating compositions where gesture and structure coexist. These layered “camadas” generate visual rhythms that move between spontaneity and architectural precision.
While painting remains central to her practice, Paula frequently experiments with format and scale. Beyond the traditional square canvas, she creates works in rhombus formats, elongated vertical compositions, and large-scale pieces that extend several meters, allowing the work to engage directly with the surrounding space.
In recent years, her research has expanded towards spatial and material collaborations. She is currently developing a silkscreen edition in collaboration with the Centro Português de Serigrafia and a ceramic tile project with ALELUIA Ceramics, exploring how her geometric language can translate into architectural surfaces and modular installations.
Paula works from Leme Atelier in Lisbon, a studio space that also hosts exhibitions, studio visits, and artistic events. Through painting, installation, and material experimentation, her practice continues to investigate how color, structure, and repetition shape the experience of space.
